Expedition into the Homeland - In the Hinterland of Lake Constance

This time, SWR's travel report takes us to Lake Constance. Presenter Annette Krause visits the region between Kressbronn on Lake Constance and Kisslegg in the Allgäu. In Kressbronn, she receives a musical welcome from the local music club upon her arrival by boat at the landing stage. What makes this special is that the mayor, Daniel Enzensperger, who is only 27 years old, plays in the club. During a tour of the town, he shows her how beautiful his community is and what major challenges await him there. Nearby is also Germany's largest inland port. Harbor master Hubert Grassel knows why Gohren is so popular with sailors.

The research of Lake Constance is the task of the Langenargen Lake Research Institute. On the ship Kormoran, scientists regularly take samples and analyze the water quality. Research is also conducted nearby at Lake Degernsee and Lake Schleinsee. The team led by Dr. Martin Mainberger discovered 6,000-year-old pile-dwelling settlements here. The idyllic landscape in the hinterland of Lake Constance is also home to farmer Maria Gührer. The winner of the SWR television program "Lecker aufs Land" (Delicious Countryside) enjoys taking her guests on a horse-drawn carriage tour of chapels.

In Amtzell, Annette Krause visits the Vogler hammer mill. Blacksmith Hans Ortlieb keeps this historic gem running and regularly gives tours. Gopperstweiler lies at the confluence of the Upper and Lower Argen rivers. This is where top chef Artur Frick-Renz, who wanted to return to his roots after many stints around the world, ended up. Annette Krause attends a grilling course at his inn. The many isolated farmsteads are typical of the Allgäu landscape.

Many farmers deliver their milk to the Leupolz Emmental cheese dairy, which recently even began producing kosher cheese for a French rabbinical monastery. A truly worthwhile sight in Kisslegg is the New Castle, which is widely known for its art exhibitions. The artist Andreas Scholz has his studio at the nearby Dürren Estate, which belongs to the Farny Brewery. The former residence of politician Oskar Farny not only houses his artworks, but also many traces of prominent statesmen such as Konrad Adenauer and Heinrich Lübke, who visited the estate.
