Whether as a superfood, in cosmetics or as bioplastics - algae can be used in many different ways. They contain valuable proteins, minerals and vitamins, which makes them a healthy addition to our diet. In medicine, the potential of algae as a source of new active ingredients is being researched. Aquatic plants also score highly in terms of sustainability: they bind CO2 and can be processed into environmentally friendly packaging. The German-French Lucie visits an algae farm in Brittany. She is shown how the nutrient-rich marine plants are cultivated and harvested. In Connemara, Ireland, John O'Halloran collects seaweed with his daughter to make desserts. Lucie shows how to prepare seaweed crisps. She makes blue pasta with the colouring from spirulina algae.
