Packed with stars, the Ukraine national team takes on Germany in a test match. The game distracts from the events that make everything else seem insignificant. Coach Serhij Rebrow says: "Football used to be number one, now it's the war."
Andriy Shevchenko and Serhiy Rebrov played together at Dynamo Kiev for five years and won the Ukrainian championship together five times. This is nothing out of the ordinary, because after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and in Ukraine, which was then recognised internationally as sovereign for the first time, Dynamo became champions in heaps, 16 times in the meantime.Shevchenko and Rebrov were strike partners and were regarded as exceptional footballers in their home country. Shevchenko also proved this outside of his home country, for example at AC Milan, with whom he won the Champions League in 2003.Rebrow's goal debut was against GermanyToday, the two are working together again. Shevchenko has been president of the football association since January 2024 because his predecessor was jailed for embezzlement.
Rebrov has been coach of the national team since June 2023. His first match in this role was the 1,000th international match in the history of the German Football Association (DFB). It ended 3:3 in Bremen, with Ukraine leading 3:1. The match was also intended as a sign of peace.
