Switzerland's dream rail routes - In the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz
The Glacier Express proudly calls itself "the world's slowest express train". From the Matterhorn to the Engadine, the train takes its guests on an unforgettable journey across Switzerland.
Over 291 bridges + through 91 tunnels, the legendary Glacier Express winds its way on its eight-hour journey from Zermatt to sophisticated St. Moritz. On its route, the train passes through the breathtaking landscapes of the cantons of Valais, Uri + Grisons.
In the Valais mountain village of Zermatt below the Matterhorn, the journey with the Glacier Express begins. Since one year, the train offers its passengers a new luxury class, called "Excellence". Kim Varela Maneta is Portuguese and, as concierge, looks after the well-being of his guests. In the kitchen, his colleague + chef Kaila whips up food for the hungry tourists in just a few square meters.
The train travels through the Mattertal valley past Visp and Brig. Then it continues through Goms + the Furka tunnel to the canton of Uri. During a short detour to the historic Furka railroad, we meet Michaela Rapp. The young German has turned her passion for railroads into a profession and works in Chur for the Rhaetian Railway.
After the Glacier Express has left the Urseren Valley + Andermatt behind it, the journey continues over the Oberalp Pass into Graubünden. Between Disentis and Chur, the train finally passes the spectacular Rhine Gorge. Here, railroad photographer Tibert Keller lives in a former railroad guard's cottage + shows how he takes his spectacular photos.
After the train has crossed the world-famous Landwasser Viaduct between Chur + Filisur, we meet Armin Brügger + his colleagues from the "Club 1899" in Samedan. With much love + passion the gentlemen restore historic locomotives and railroads. A little later, the journey of the Glacier Express ends at the station in St. Moritz.
