NaturNah – The Sprite and the Forester – In Search of the Edible Dormouse
Martin Schmid is a forestry engineer who conducts forest inventories. His goal is to restore this habitat to a state that is as close to nature as possible. In the Sternberg Lake District, he comes across traces of a mysterious animal. It quickly becomes clear that the creature in question can only be the shy edible dormouse—a species considered extremely rare in Mecklenburg. Martin Schmid sets out to track them down. In an ancient forest on the island of Oie, he discovers a colony of over 400 of these animals, resulting in fascinating photographs and documentation of the nocturnal creatures. Back on the mainland, Martin Schmid applies the insights gained from observing these "nocturnal sprites" to the forests closer to home. He pins his hopes on forest owners, aiming to make them realize that only near-natural forests offer sufficient protection for many animal species, including the edible dormouse. A race against time begins.
