Checker Tobi - The Fall of the Wall Check
Thirty years ago, the Berlin Wall fell. Before that, there was not just one Germany as we know it today, but two; one in the West and one in the East: the FRG and the GDR. The two countries were separated by a kilometer-long wall and high fences. But why was the wall built in the first place? Why was Germany divided? And how did it finally come to the night the Wall fell? First we go on a journey through time with musician and dancer Bürger Lars Dietrich in a Trabi. Lars, who spent his childhood and youth in the East, takes the Checker to a picnic at a quarry pond. There he is served GDR delicacies and later Lars shows him what it was like to live in the divided Germany. Jörg Drieselmann from the Stasi Museum in Berlin reveals to Tobi why the Stasi, the Ministry for State Security, had the citizens of the GDR monitored. Tobi checks out what tricks the state came up with and where the Stasi people hid their listening devices. Finally, Tobi meets Bettina Gräf. She was in Berlin the night the Wall came down and remembers very well what it was like when hundreds of thousands of people were able to travel from East to West overnight. Tobi and Bettina are catapulted into the historic night by a television trick and relive the events at the border passages and the Wall of that time.
