die nordstory - Advent in the north

It's Christmas time in this "nordstory":

Hamburg: Pre-Christmas time on St. Pauli: When peaceful visitors drink their mulled wine and swing to hot live music between neon lights and the constant tattoo of police cars, it's Santa Pauli, St. Pauli's very special Christmas market. © NDR

Santa Pauli in Hamburg, St. Pauli's very special Christmas market.

Neon signs, on St. Pauli it sparkles and glitters all year round. But in the run-up to Christmas, the neighborhood also pauses for a bit. "Santa Pauli" - a Christmas market of a somewhat different kind. This applies to both sales booths and the public. The stand operators are also a very special people. "Am Schmidt Theater" directly on the Reeperbahn is rehearsing for a children's musical: "Die Weihnachtsbäckerei".

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: the shepherd from Hullerbusch: the "Zansen"- one of the lakes around the shepherd Hullerbusch. The "Zansen" is one of the lakes around the sheep farm Hullerbusch. In Jakob Hermühlen's sheepfold in the dreamy countryside between Carwitzer See + Schmaler Luzin in the Feldberger Seenlandschaft, 400 Pomeranian sheep and 30 goats have been living under his care for several years. From one day to the next, the trained carpenter had to take over the traditional business of his father, an accident had taken him out of life.

Jakob has remained true to the family tradition, keeping the old Hullerbusch logo. But wool processing, marketing + sales stands bear his signature. Two young shearers from Berlin also join him, they are gentler to the animals.

Lower Saxony: until all the bulbs burn. Hanover's Christmas lights: lighting in the pedestrian zone Hanover. The Christmas lighting in Hanover's pedestrian zone is spectacular. The largest continuous Christmas lighting in the world is installed in Hanover's city center. Shining poinsettias and twinkling fairy lights, bigger than in New York! More than 300,000 light points, a good 100 shooting stars and ten kilometers of fairy lights have to be installed at adventurous heights.

A climbing team from Tyrol has been requested. The largest poinsettia weighs 250 kilograms + has a diameter of nine meters! Martin Prenzler, master of lights and stars, is particularly proud of the LED technology. It saves 90 percent energy. Everyone is looking forward to the big moment when the lights go on in Hanover! "die nordstory" is there.

Schleswig-Holstein: Advent in the UNESCO World Heritage Site: The master confectioner becomes a raisin picker: Aurèle Uter wants to prevent the raisins from charring on the outside in the oven. The master confectioner becomes a raisin picker: Aurèle Uter wants to prevent the raisins from charring during baking.

Lübeck, the former queen among the Hanseatic cities, attracts hordes of visitors, especially during Advent, with lovingly decorated historic alleys + various Christmas markets that extend over large parts of the old town island. A very special market is to be created around the European Hanse Museum: very tranquil, a little away from the big hustle and bustle. Marian Rojahn is in charge of the construction + has two big tasks ahead of him.

How can he succeed in creating a cozy atmosphere that invites families with children in particular to linger? And above all: how can he organize an ice rink in pink, which Lübeck's head of tourism would like so much as an attraction for the kids? Master confectioner Aurèle Uter works right next door in the small Café Fräulein Brömse. Sweet temptations are served there, in the former confessional house of Lübeck's Burgkloster, of all places.

Aurèle's plan: He wants to finally counter the classic and world-famous Dresden Christstollen with a Lübeck variant! In the city library, he has rummaged through old recipe books from the 16th century. Perhaps he will find an interesting idea for his Hanseatic Christstollen there. In any case, one thing is certain: Marzipan must definitely be included as an ingredient.
