"DOK" series: Adventures in the Gulf
Coralie Durussel came to Qatar with her mother when she was just two years old. She is now a mother of two small children herself and works for the Supreme Committee, the body that organizes the World Cup in Qatar for Fifa. She is married to motorcycle racer Saeed Al Sulaiti. A love story that had to overcome many obstacles, as Qatari tribal families usually marry among their own kind.
Hotelier Chris Franzen moved to Doha to get the new Waldorf Astoria Lusail going for the World Cup. Before that, he lived with his family in India. His wife Rachel and their two teenagers are used to changing their place of residence every now and then because of Chris' job, and since they had already lived in Dubai before India, the change is not that difficult.
Matteo Boffa from Ticino is trying his luck in Dubai. He invests in sustainable start-ups. For example, he is involved in a shoe company that produces vegan sneakers out of plastic, or in a laundry service that wants to become more sustainable. He has also found happiness in his private life and met Megan, a South African. The two recently got married, but the big wedding ceremony fell through because of Corona.
Andrea Hirschi moved to Dubai with her family in 2019 because her husband took a job here. She is still a bit suspicious of all the luxury and glamour, but she has gotten used to certain things by now. The biggest challenge was that the trained hairdresser has had to run her hairdressing business in Bern from a distance for more than two years.
Rita Schiavi was on the board of the Construction and Industry Trade Union for 17 years and has been carrying out inspections on Qatar's stadium construction sites with an international team since 2018. The working conditions of the foreign workers in the scorching heat + their accommodation have been repeatedly criticized. Rita is waiting in Basel to finally be allowed back into Qatar. Due to Corona, the inspections have been delayed several times. But in and of itself, however, she is positively surprised about the cooperation with the Qataris and says that many things have already improved in the time since the inspections were carried out.
