In the land of the Staufers

The land of the Staufers between the Rems + Fils rivers is a region steeped in history. From here, the ruling dynasty started its triumphal procession through half of Europe in the Middle Ages.

Presenter Annette Krause is initiated into the art of sword fighting in a manner befitting a guild in the Wäscherschloss. In the museum on Hohenstaufen near Göppingen, she learns a lot about the ruling dynasty. Its most famous representative was Friedrich Barbarossa. In keeping with his status, Michelin-starred chef Rolf Straubinger serves his exquisite menus at Staufeneck Castle. For the "Expedition to the Homeland," he draws inspiration from the Staufian culinary arts.

The Kaiserberge mountains near Göppingen are the adopted home of the internationally renowned jewelry designer Georg Spreng. He welcomes Annette in his imperial-looking but very modern home and studio. Schloss Weißenstein is home to the Kage family, which has converted the venerable walls into a center for microphotography.

Rechberghausen, the small community in the district of Göppingen, claims to be the marriage capital of the southwest. I wonder if this has something to do with the many women who work in the town hall. Women power also at the "Allgäu-Lilie" company. At the foot of the Swabian Alb, alpine traditional costume fashion is interpreted in a modern + successful way. In the monastery of Lorch, trained birds of prey fly - just as they once did when Emperor Frederick II was praised worldwide for his knowledge of hunting with birds.
