Vet on Föhr Janine Bahr-van Gemmert is not only a vet on Föhr, Amrum and the neighbouring mainland, but also an animal rescuer. On call seven days a week around the clock, a challenge that Janine Bahr-van Gemmert can only meet with her helpers at Tierhuus Insel Föhr. The patients are pets of islanders and holidaymakers as well as sick and injured wild animals. No animal, large or small, should suffer if it can be helped: from wrens to cold-blooded horses.

Art project Pflanzenklang Two artists in Hanover want to show that not only can humans talk to plants, but that plants can also talk to humans. Silke Rokitta and Markus Hutter wire up trees, shrubs and grasses and give them a voice. A synthesiser makes the electrical currents of the plants audible. The two artists will be on the road with their installation, the STRŒME project, in various parts of Hanover until the autumn. Their aim is to draw attention to the scarcity of greenery in urban areas.

African sounds from Walsrode The Sansula is a small thumb piano. The wooden hand flatterer is a product from Lower Saxony. The instruments are handmade by the second generation of the Hokema family business in Walsrode. It is a long and interesting journey from the piece of wood to the finished instrument. And: you can play this instrument after just ten minutes of practice. Open-air cinema: the Zeise Kino's big summer cinema party Cinema manager Matthias Elwardt organises a whole host of cinema events with film and drama teams throughout the year, and during the open-air season he adds a new venue.

In the cosy inner courtyard of Altona Town Hall, the screen is raised, the chairs placed and the blankets laid out night after night for two months. To make sure it's a great evening at the cinema. In addition to cinema screenings, literary and music events are also being added this year. Matthias Elwardt brings the stars to his open-air cinema with excellent networking.

He invited Fatih Akin to the kick-off on 1 July. On tour with Brazil: Mazinho de Souza Mazinho de Souza from Hamburg is the unofficial ambassador of his native Brazil. He plays several instruments, masters various Brazilian music styles, but has also already recorded a love ode to the changeable weather in Hamburg. He plans to release a new album by the end of the year. This summer, the man from Rio is spreading the special vibe of Latin America at street parties, park concerts, festivals and clubs.

Often in his company: a mobile cocktail bar in the national colours of Brazil, green, yellow, blue and white. Always with him: music that makes you want to dance and party. The "Nordtour" is travelling with the man from Rio to the places that he and his two bands are now making swing. The Tractor Olympics in Imbsen The "only true" 2024 Olympics for tractor enthusiasts will take place on a field in Imbsen, organised by the Bulldog Club Imbsen.

Different historic tractors compete on several skill courses. The club was founded more than 30 years ago to save old tractors. The club now has 60 members and 15 tractors, from 1938 to the 1970s. Their sound is incomparable and firing up the old machines is spectacular. 50 years of the Steinhuder Meer National Park: book launch In 1974, the Steinhuder Meer and other parts of the surrounding landscape became a nature park. To mark its 50th anniversary, Heinrich Hecht has created a kind of birthday book for the nature park.

He has been taking photographs since he was eleven years old. However, he only made photography his profession in 1986, after years as an industrial clerk and salesman. As a result, he has travelled a lot around the world, but he is always drawn back to Lake Steinhude. Together with other authors and photos from friends and acquaintances, he has published an illustrated book with history and stories about his home. It makes you want to visit the Steinhuder Meer Nature Park, and not just for your bi

Oceanographic Museum before the opening Since the end of 2020, the Oceanographic Museum in Stralsund has been completely remodelled. Although the complete reopening is still a little way off, the exhibitions in the historic Katharinenkloster monastery will be open to visitors from 17 July. Preparations for this are currently in full swing. As the complete museum tour will not be ready until October, visitors will only pay half the admission price until then. Hallig: crêpes with North Sea air Virginia Karau has lived on Hallig Langeneß for more than 20 years and is the sexton and organist in the Hallig church.

Although her café Kookenstuv is now history, the trained musician and mother of three has a new project: the CrepePesel on the neighbouring Hallig Hooge. A snack bar serving delicious fish sandwiches as well as crepes and ice cream. It is quite possible that Virginia Karau could even be seen here as an entertainer. Then she simply picks up her accordion and sings atmospheric shanties and sea shanties.

Portrait Malte Brekenfeld The painter Malte Brekenfeld draws from a never-ending well of imagination and skill and amazes many people with his work. His works are just as popular in the galleries of cruise ships as they are in the countryside of Mecklenburg. In Repnitz, a team from the "Nordtour" looks over his shoulder, observes him and asks what the artist thinks of the world, which he paints in a colourful way, but often with a wink, sarcasm and humour.
