Beautiful - The volcanic island of Sicily: holidays on Stromboli and Lipari

The volcanic islands of Sicily - holidays on Stromboli and Lipari On the way with Tamina Kallert Wild and of course, original + idyllic, with breathtaking natural phenomena and Mediterranean flair - this is how the Aeolian Islands off the coast of Sicily present themselves. Famous are their fire-breathing mountains, but the archipelago itself is still an insider tip.

Tamina Kallert is on holiday on Stromboli, Lipari + her five sisters and immerses herself in the Italian joie de vivre. She experiences how the volcano Stromboli spits lava and enjoys a fantastic view from the crater rim on Vulcano. She takes a therapeutic mud bath and a bath in the natural whirlpool, tastes fresh capers and sweet dessert wine and discovers a bizarre underwater world including sulphur fountains. Her travel companion is a German woman who first fell in love with the Aeolian Islands and then on these very islands. Stromboli - where the mountain spits fire Stromboli on the island of the same name is the most active volcano in Europe: the approximately 930-metre-high mountain of fire spits up boulders + lava every 15 - 20 minutes, accompanied by huge clouds of smoke and the finest volcanic dust. Tamina Kallert watches this spectacle from a safe distance from the boat. Culture + Italian flair on Lipari The history of the Aeolian Islands goes back to 5,000 BC. So on Lipari you can discover the traces of Greeks, Romans, Normans, Spaniards, pirates + corsairs.

Tamina Kallert visits the oldest bathing establishment in the world, enjoys the view from the Chiesa Vecchia, the old church, to the neighbouring island Salina + goes fishing. Volcanic glass and pumice stone Even today, volcanic glass, also called obsidian, can be found on the beaches. Already the stone age people processed it to knives and tools. Until the year 2000 one of the highest quality pumice stones in the world was mined on the Aeolian Islands. Then Unesco declared the region a World Natural Heritage Site - and the factories were shut down.
